TCS Tracking Statuses Explained
Booked, in transit, out for delivery, exception, RTO. Each line on a TCS tracking result is a scan recorded at a real point in the journey. Here is what every one of them means and which ones need action from you.

Quick answer: a TCS status is a scan, not a live position. Booked, picked up, in transit and arrived at facility all mean the shipment is moving normally, and gaps between them are expected. Out for delivery means a courier has it today. Delivered closes the shipment. Only held, exception, delivery attempted and returned to sender call for anything from you.
How to read a status
Every line in a tracking history was written by a physical scan: a parcel passing a counter, a sorting belt or a courier’s handheld device. Nothing is generated on a timer. That single fact explains most of the confusion people have with courier tracking, because the quiet stretches between two scans are the parcel actually travelling, not the system failing.
Each line carries three things: when the scan happened, what it recorded, and where. The location matters as much as the status. Two scans a day apart at two different facilities describe a parcel covering ground. Two scans a day apart at the same facility describe a parcel waiting.
The normal delivery sequence
Most shipments run through these stages in order. Not every parcel shows every one, because a short intercity route passes fewer scan points than a long one.
| Status | What has actually happened | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Booked | The consignment number exists and the shipment is registered. The parcel may still be with the sender or waiting for collection. | Nothing. Wait for the first movement scan. |
| Picked up | TCS physically has the parcel, usually at the origin Express Centre or on the way to a sorting facility. | Nothing. |
| In transit | The parcel is moving between facilities. This is where the longest silences appear, because there is nothing on the road to scan against. | Nothing, unless it has been several days past the expected window. |
| Arrived at facility | A sorting point has received it, either an intermediate hub or the one serving your area. | Nothing. Delivery routing happens from here. |
| Out for delivery | A courier has the parcel on a route. This normally means today, though no specific hour is committed. | Keep the phone number given at booking reachable. |
| Delivered | Handover is recorded with a date, a time and the name of whoever signed. On a COD parcel this also means the cash was collected. | Check the signed by name if the parcel is not in your hands. |

Statuses that mean something is wrong
These are different in kind from a quiet status. Silence means no news. These mean a specific event was recorded and the parcel will not move again until it is resolved.
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery attempted | The courier reached the address but could not hand the parcel over. Nobody available, address unclear, or the recipient declined it. There is usually a note saying which. | Call the helpline to arrange a redelivery, or ask whether you can collect from a nearby Express Centre. |
| Held | The shipment is stopped at a facility pending something: an address correction, a working phone number, or paperwork on an international parcel. | Find out what is missing and get it to TCS through the sender if the booking details need changing. |
| Exception | A catch-all for anything outside the normal flow. It always has a cause, and the cause is what you need from the helpline. | Call with the consignment number and ask what the exception was raised for. |
| Returned to sender (RTO) | Delivery could not be completed and the parcel is travelling back. Return to origin is the same thing under a different label. | Contact the sender. Once a parcel is on the return leg only they can arrange a reshipment. |
| No record found | Not a status at all. The system has nothing against that number, which points at a typo, a number that is too new, or a different courier. | Recheck the number character by character, then see the number guide below. |
The line worth internalising: a quiet status is not a problem, a flagged status is. A parcel sitting on in transit for two days is ordinary. A parcel sitting on exception for two hours already needs a phone call.
Why your wording may not match this page
TCS runs several services and scans happen at different kinds of facility, so the exact label attached to a scan varies. You may see a phrase describing an arrival, a departure or a handover that is not word for word what is listed above. The stages themselves stay the same, and almost every label maps onto one of them.
When a label genuinely does not fit any of the six normal stages, treat it as an exception and ask the helpline. Guessing at unfamiliar courier wording is how people end up waiting on a parcel that needed action days earlier.
Which statuses actually need action from you
- Out for delivery: only that the phone stays reachable. Couriers call to confirm an address more often than people expect.
- Delivery attempted: act the same day if you can. Undeliverable parcels eventually go back to the sender.
- Held or exception: call TCS and ask for the specific reason. This is the one category where waiting costs you.
- Delivered but not in your hands: read the signed by name first, then call. Delivery records are easier to trace close to the event.
- Everything else: no action. Movement statuses resolve themselves.
One warning that belongs here. People waiting on a delivery are a standing target for fraud calls about customs fees, delivery charges and OTP confirmations. TCS does not ask for an OTP, a card number or a payment link. Cash on delivery is paid in cash, at the door, to the courier.
Frequently asked questions
What does in transit mean on TCS tracking?
The parcel is moving between facilities. Scans only happen at facilities, so a stretch of hours or a day with no new line is normal while the shipment is genuinely travelling.
What does out for delivery mean?
A courier has the parcel and is working a delivery route. It usually means the same day, but no particular hour is promised. Keep the phone number given at booking switched on.
What is RTO in TCS tracking?
Return to origin. The parcel could not be delivered and is on its way back to the sender. It stays trackable on the same consignment number for the return leg.
What does an exception status mean?
Something outside the normal delivery flow was recorded and the parcel is paused until it is resolved. Common causes are an incomplete address, an unreachable recipient, or documentation on an international shipment. The helpline can tell you the specific reason.
My status says delivered but I have not received the parcel.
Check the signed by name first. Parcels are frequently handed to building security, an office reception, a neighbour or a family member. If nobody at the address recognises the name, call TCS with the consignment number and ask where it was left and who accepted it.
The status has not changed for days. Is my parcel lost?
Usually not. A silent status means no scan has been recorded, not that the parcel has stopped. It becomes worth checking on after several working days with no change, or immediately if the result shows a flagged status rather than silence.
