TCS vs Pakistan Post: Cost, Speed and When Each One Wins
Pakistan Post publishes its counter rates. TCS does not. That single difference tells you most of what you need: one is a government service priced by public tariff, the other a private courier priced by route.

Quick answer: Pakistan Post is far cheaper for light documents. Its published Urgent Mail Service tariff for walk-in customers starts at Rs 51 for a local article up to 250 grams and Rs 86 city to city, before GST. No private courier competes with that. But UMS carries a restriction most people never read: articles whose intrinsic value is more than two thousand rupees are not to be sent by UMS. That rules it out for a phone, a laptop or jewellery, and that is where TCS takes over, along with faster transit, denser tracking updates and a proper COD system for sellers. Pakistan Post is a government department. TCS is a private company.

What each one costs
Pakistan Post publishes a walk-in tariff for UMS, which makes it one of the few couriers in Pakistan where you can know the price before leaving home:
| UMS service | Up to 250 g | Up to 500 g | Each additional 500 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| UMS Local | Rs 51 | Rs 64 | Rs 26 |
| UMS City to City | Rs 86 | Rs 132 | Rs 43 |
GST is added on top and varies by province: 16% in Islamabad and Punjab, 15% in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, and 13% in Sindh. Corporate and bulk customers are told to approach local postal officers for a discounted tariff.
TCS publishes no equivalent table. Its rate calculator prices a specific route, weight and service, and the counter or the helpline will confirm. For a 200 gram document going from one city to another, the gap between the two is not close, and Pakistan Post wins on price by a wide margin. For a 12 kg parcel, or anything valuable, price is no longer the question that decides it.
The tariff above is as published on Pakistan Post’s own site at the time of writing. Public tariffs are revised, so confirm the current figure at the counter before budgeting around it.
What you are allowed to send
This section matters more than price, and almost no comparison mentions it.
Pakistan Post states that UMS articles are first class letter mail, and that currency notes, coins, platinum, gold and silver bullion, precious stones, precious metals, firearms, explosives, flammable liquids, perishables and anything whose intrinsic value exceeds two thousand rupees shall not be sent by UMS. Read that last clause again if you were planning to post a phone. The maximum permissible weight for a UMS article is 30 kg, with a maximum length of 1.50 metres and length and width combined not exceeding 2.00 metres.
TCS carries ordinary goods well above that value as routine business, which is why online orders in Pakistan travel by private courier rather than by post. Its own limits are about the nature of the item and the destination rather than a rupee figure, and the counter will tell you what a given destination does not accept.
The practical rule: documents, forms, certificates and printed matter suit Pakistan Post. Goods with resale value suit a private courier.
Speed
Pakistan Post describes UMS as an overnight or second-day home delivery service with, in its words, the widest network. TCS describes Overnight Express as next-day delivery covering 90% of destinations on its network.
Both claims are the companies’ own. What is not in dispute is the shape of the difference. Private couriers run tighter linehaul schedules and denser scanning, so a TCS parcel usually produces more tracking activity and a narrower delivery window. Pakistan Post’s advantage is reach: it delivers to small towns and rural addresses through post offices in places where a private courier may only reach the nearest city and hand over to a local arrangement.
If the destination is a village address, ask both. The cheaper service is sometimes also the one that actually reaches the door.
Tracking compared
TCS
Enter the consignment number in the tracking box on this site, on the TCS website, or call the helpline. Statuses are explained in the TCS status guide, and if nothing has moved for a day or two, see TCS tracking not updating.
Pakistan Post
Tracking runs through the EMTTS system, the Express Mail Track and Trace System, at ep.gov.pk, where you enter your tracking ID. A Pakistan Post tracking ID will not work in the box on this site, because this tool reads TCS consignment numbers only.
Pakistan Post warns on its own tracking page that ep.gov.pk is its website for online tracking and that other tracking links do not belong to it. Given how many lookalike tracking sites exist for both carriers, that is worth taking seriously whichever one you are chasing.
COD and online sellers
Both offer cash on delivery, but not at the same level of development. TCS runs Retail-COD for small sellers, which it says can be opened at any Express Centre with no subscription and no minimum shipment count, plus account COD with the Envio portal for booking, tracking and reconciling in bulk. Pakistan Post offers a COD option on UMS.
For a working online shop the deciding factors are settlement speed, the cost of a returned parcel, and whether the courier’s systems plug into how you already work. Get all of it in writing before committing stock to either. The mechanics on the TCS side are covered in the TCS COD guide and TCS return tracking.
One constraint carries over from the section above: the UMS value restriction applies to what you ship, not just to how you ship it. Most e-commerce orders sit above Rs 2,000 in value.
Messages asking you to pay online
Both organisations have published warnings about the same scam, which tells you how common it has become.
Pakistan Post states that it collects duty and taxes on articles through its own manual system, that it has no online system or call centre for collecting money from customers, and that it will not be responsible for losses if you pay through a link or an app. TCS says its riders only call to confirm a name and address, and that it never asks for payment links, OTPs or personal details.
So the rule is the same for both: do not pay through a link sent by SMS or WhatsApp, never share an OTP, and if a message claims your parcel is held pending a fee, call the organisation yourself on its published helpline with your tracking number and ask.
Which to choose
- A certificate, form or set of documents: Pakistan Post UMS, at a fraction of courier pricing.
- Anything worth more than Rs 2,000: a private courier. UMS is not meant to carry it.
- A rural or small-town address: ask Pakistan Post first, since post office reach often goes further.
- An urgent intercity parcel with a tight deadline: TCS Overnight Express.
- A heavy shipment: TCS, which takes up to 999 kg on Economy Express against the 30 kg UMS limit.
- An online shop shipping COD orders: TCS, for the seller portal and settlement infrastructure.
- Government or institutional correspondence: Pakistan Post, which most departments already use.
What we could not verify
The UMS tariff page on Pakistan Post’s site carries an old copyright date, so the rates on it may not be the ones charged at your counter today. We have reproduced them as published, and the counter is the authority on the current figure.
Neither organisation publishes a route-level delivery guarantee that would let anyone say one is reliably faster than the other on your particular route. Both timing claims on this page are self-published. Several third-party sites also quote UMS delivery windows from one to seven days, which is wide enough to suggest the figures are estimates rather than commitments.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pakistan Post cheaper than TCS?
For light documents, yes, and by a wide margin. Pakistan Post’s published UMS tariff starts at Rs 51 local and Rs 86 city to city for an article up to 250 grams, before GST. TCS does not publish a comparable counter rate, and its prices for the same document are considerably higher.
Is TCS a government company?
No. TCS is a private company founded in 1983. Pakistan Post is the government postal service, working under the federal government.
Can I send a mobile phone through Pakistan Post UMS?
Pakistan Post states that articles whose intrinsic value exceeds two thousand rupees are not to be sent by UMS, which rules out most phones. Ask the counter which service is appropriate, or use a private courier.
What is the maximum weight for Pakistan Post UMS?
30 kg per article, with a maximum length of 1.50 metres and length and width combined not exceeding 2.00 metres. TCS Economy Express accepts up to 999 kg.
Which is faster, TCS or Pakistan Post?
TCS is generally the faster option between cities and produces more frequent tracking updates. Pakistan Post describes UMS as an overnight or second-day service, and its strength is reach into smaller towns rather than speed.
Can I track a Pakistan Post parcel here?
No. This site reads TCS consignment numbers only. Pakistan Post tracking runs on its EMTTS system at ep.gov.pk, which it names as its own tracking website.
